What the school system asks of a five-year-old
Looking beyond a list of school-readiness skills
It can feel as though there is a lot to prepare before school. I would ask the school what it actually expects, and ask the people who know your child what helps them feel comfortable, curious and able to take part.
Check the expectations of the particular school
- Ask teachers for examples from everyday activities
- Look at confidence, communication and settling as well as skills
- Leave room for play and rest
Worth considering
A weekly class can offer another view of your child. It should not become a rehearsal for every possible school interview.
