“Hear more yeses”
Vivian from Jungle Arts tells us why getting it wrong is the point
An art class might give children an example to copy, or materials to explore in their own way. Vivian spoke about wanting children to feel able to try something without worrying that they have got it wrong.
Jungle Arts was started after Vivian left her job in the business word and put all her energy into building a space for children to have creative freedom. After spending some time in the wellbeing and mental health space, she really believed in the importance of a balanced childhood within our busy city lives
Yes there is the wish for children to learn and reach milestones, but also still having space to be themselves. Vivian describes that balance through her experience as a parent.
I asked Vivian why she started Jungle Arts
“As adults, we wanna tell them all, ‘This is right, this is wrong. Colour inside the lines.’ And there’s a time and place for that, but at the same time, being able to trust in yourself, being able to try, even if it doesn’t look perfect, I think just as important, if not more.”
I asked what she struggles with as a parent herself
“I want them to learn something, I want to make sure they’re reaching the milestones, but at the same time, I also want that perfect balance where they are also allowed to just be themselves.”
“It’s very important, especially in a high-pressure environment in Hong Kong, that kids are allowed to hear more yeses.”
See how your child enjoys the space, where they spend time, are they engrossed in it - it can be quite a calming experience as an adult too!
