When words aren’t enough
Art as a way to explore, and a way to say something
I liked the distinction Joss made between giving toddlers room to experiment and helping older children find more ways to express themselves.
I asked Joss why art matters to her. Her answer was quite personal: “Art has been a companion for me for my good days and bad days.”
That is what she wants children to have too. For toddlers, she described tools to try and room to experiment. With older children, she wants to build a creative vocabulary through colours, brush strokes and composition, so there are more ways to express what is in their heads and hearts.
When choosing an art class, ask what children can choose for themselves and how the teaching changes as they grow
