What we thought
Mandarin immersion playgroup
Central
13 months
4 children
Mandarin
A small, simple room, with Mandarin doing most of the work. We liked how little there was to distract from the teacher and one another.
What the session was like
Free play with a themed basket
Welcome circle and opening song
Activities around the month’s theme
A short physical activity
Biscuit snack, with children asking in Mandarin
Closing circle and book
What we loved
Mandarin throughout. The songs and interaction held the room, rather than lots of equipment
Children who did not speak Mandarin at home were joining in too
What we noticed
The teacher stayed relaxed when children wandered or cried, and made room for another turn
If an activity did not catch a child’s interest, the teacher generally moved on. The compact room meant less space to roam
Worth knowing
Adults stayed throughout. Ask who teaches your weekly session
